The book starts with a treatise of the VVS(Army Air Force) color systems including a detailed breakdown on colors, types of paints used, interior colors, and painting of various components.
The development and histories of various Soviet aircraft are described in the following chapters including coverage of the LaGG 3, La 5, La 5FN, La 7, Mig 1, Mig 3, Polikarpov I 15, I 152, I 153, I 16, Yak 1, Yak 3, Yak 7, and Yak 9, as well as coverage of various prototype aircraft.
Each chapter on the individual aircraft include numerous line drawings as well as full colour plans detailing the various camouflage patterns that each aircraft were painted in, plus colour profiles detailing specific aircraft. There are a large number of photos including many that had never before been published.
The book contains 5 appendices with information regarding specific prototype aircraft, national markings, pilots, and performance information.
The author is quick to point out the irregularities of the color systems used as well as a fascinating insight into the workings of the various state aviation factories which makes this book an interesting read.
