Description
This is the story of just over a year in the life of a fighter squadron, No. 245, which flew Hawker Hurricanes from RAF Aldergrove, and subsequently, RAF Ballyhalbert in 1940-41. It was the only air defence unit to serve in Northern Ireland during the Belfast Blitz. It also flew on important convoy escort duties and, perhaps surprisingly, acted as an Operational Training Unit for Polish, Czech, Free French and Norwegian pilots. This ‘hidden history’ has never been told in detail before. The author has received great help from historians throughout Europe and also in Great Britain and Ireland and is able to reveal the squadron’s part in the mystery of Rudolf Hess.
