The first issue of the magazine “Le Moniteur de l’Aéronautique” arrived on newsstands in October 1977. In November 1981, the last issue put an end to 49 publications rich in current affairs and aviation history content.
In the aftermath of the war, the French aeronautical industry experienced a period of extraordinary renaissance. Finally freed from the yoke of the occupier, it let explode all that it had until then contained in terms of projects, innovations and new ideas. And, as if to forget a still bitter defeat, she threw herself headlong into reconquering the sky. Thus were born, at that time, a number of extraordinary projects
This compilation reflects the French policy of developing combat aircraft prototypes between the years 1945 and 1960: incredibly rich. Many of the aircraft described in the pages of the Moniteur de l’Aéronautique never benefited from mass production. They nevertheless presented remarkable characteristics and technological innovations. The 20 articles included in this edition paint a faithful picture of the research avenues explored by the design offices of manufacturers which have now disappeared or which, for the most part, have merged into the large groups of SNIAS, then EADS, then Airbus. No Dassault prototype is mentioned in this compilation since they are the subject of a separate edition.
