This first volume is mainly devoted to the design, development and technical description of the aircraft, from the Mystère XXII to the Étendard IVM and addresses the entry into service of this aircraft and its operational career within the 15F Flotillas. , 11F, at CEPA (Commission for Practical Aviation Studies) and the ERC (Reception-Convoying Escadrille).
The description of the aircraft is very complete and covers all aspects of the Étendard , from its equipment to its engine including an exhaustive inventory of the cockpit, its layout and its particularities . For example, a page is devoted to the air conditioning system with the different circuit diagrams and the illustration of the defogging system usable by the pilot.
It is a real dive into the systems of an aircraft, an exploration which allows you to imagine the complexity of the development of an aircraft, the difficulty of its development. Model makers as well as fans of flight simulators will undoubtedly find there an inexhaustible source of inspiration, enthusiasts of aeronautical technique and engineering will not be left out.
In addition to the countless illustrations, in black and white, but also in colour, the profiles (signed Thierry Dekker), the three-view plans and extracts from the technical manuals, the author produces the complete list of “apponteurs” on Étendard IVM and P covering the period from September 19, 1960 to October 6, 1999, tells us, year by year, the adventures of two major formations of French naval aviation, and devotes a large part of the book to the testimonies of those involved in the Étendard adventure. Engineers and test pilots, from the Navy or the manufacturer, pilots from different units and of all ranks, from petty officer to admiral, Jean-Marie Gall interviewed countless personalities linked to this aircraft.
