Description

By the end of July 1944, the Soviet advance westward had reached the Baltic states. The Germans had a strong stronghold in Courland, but when they lost control of Estonia, panic broke out and the Germans began to retreat back to Germany and Poland. Fierce fighting broke out and a large number of Balts sought their way across the Baltic Sea to Sweden. Several of these arrived by aircraft. One such aircraft was the Henschel Hs 126B-1 that landed at Herrvik on Gotland on October 8. The aircraft was flown by two Latvians who were allowed to stay in Sweden. Towards the end of spring, the aircraft was purchased by AB Nordisk Aero-tjänst in Norrköping. It was intended to be used for target towing. There was a great demand for faster and more powerful machines for this task. After a major overhaul and repainting, it was to be test flown at Kungsängen. Unfortunately, it turned out that the aircraft was shaking badly and they chose to land after only 20 minutes of flight. The propeller was bent and it was not possible to get a new one, so it was decided to scrap the aircraft.

The book is in Swedish but includes a separate English translation.
